Trinityhouse Glenvista Kickboxing star shines at championships

Zuhayr Hoosen is happy to announce himself as the champion of the South African National Kickboxing Championships k1 division.

Zuhayr Hoosen (15), a Grade Nine learner at Trinityhouse Glenvista, came first in his division on K-1 (a kickboxing style) at the South African National Kickboxing Championships held at the North West, Potchefstroom, indoor sports centre.

The event was held from April 25 until 28, having more than 600 participants across various techniques.

Competitors took part in a series of knockout rounds before reaching the finals, all striving for the top spot in their respective divisions.

Despite this, Zuhayr emerged victorious as the South African champion in his division.

According to his mother, Zubeida Patel, Zuhayr began kickboxing last year as a way to become fit but soon fell in love with K-1, which is full-contact fighting, and it became a passion.

This young inspiring star also earned his Gauteng colours earlier this year, which had a big impact on his kickboxing career.

Zuhayr said that it was an honour to participate in the Kickboxing Championship.

“We all feel very proud of Zuhayr for progressing so fast. He displayed dedication and it certainly paid off,” said Patel.

A seasoned kickboxer, the manager of the KFA Martial Arts gyms and a trained shihan, Johan van der Schyff, was in the limelight of this sporting spectacle.

With a career spanning 24 years, including 15 years at Potchefstroom when he joined and subsequently took over the campus club, Johan’s kickboxing journey demonstrates his love for the sport.
