Action awaits boxing fans this weekend

Rising star Charlton ‘Baby Pain’ Malajika faces seasoned Filipino Froilan Saludar on the Destiny’s Decree undercard, while Alberton’s Bryan Thysse battles Benoni’s Michael Head in the Rising Titans final for the national title and R250 000 purse.

After outclassing Filipino RV Deniega in July at Emperors Palace to claim the IBO Youth Bantamweight world title, rising SA boxing star Charlton ‘Baby Pain’ Malajika of Regents Park will be back in the ring at the same venue on October 4.

This time, he will fight another Filipino, Froilan Saludar, in an international bantamweight fight scheduled for eight rounds on the undercard of the Destiny’s Decree Box and Dine tournament.

Malajika is confident, but he will have his work cut out against the experienced Saludar. The eight-time SA amateur champion, who boxes out of the Brian Mitchell Boxing Academy Gym in Edenvale, has only nine professional fights (with one loss). The 36-year-old Saludar has 46, making him Malajika’s toughest opponent yet.

A win on Saturday for Malajika will take him to 10-1, with the only blemish on his record a loss in his first professional fight.

Alberton’s Bryan Thysse and Benoni’s Michael Head will battle for the SA light heavyweight title to see who is crowned the Rising Titans champion when they meet in the headline bout.

To reach the final of the four-man light heavyweight Rising Titans tournament, Thysse beat Randburg’s Tuvia Wewege, and Head triumphed over Bonginkosi Nhlapo of Middleburg in March at the Palace of Dreams.

The winner on Saturday will take home bragging rights, the SA title, and 60% of the R250 000 purse.

Thysse will be looking to follow in his father, Andre, and brother, Brandon’s, footsteps by beating Head and becoming an SA champion.
