Mashaba welcomes Operation Fiela – a possible crime solution

JOBURG – 'The launch of this operation is a step in the right direction for ensuring the safety of our residents and those of province as a whole'

Joburg’s crime needs addressing and the relaunched Operation Fiela, is government’s latest plan of action to do so.

In late January, the City of Johannesburg and other law enforcement departments like the South African police joined in the initiative, as Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba said, we need to rid Johannesburg of the scourge of criminals who think the city is their personal playground.

Metro police’s new chief, David Tembe was also at the relaunch of Operation Fiela. He explained that it is an integrated plan to address crime by doing raids, stop and searches, roadblocks to search for drugs, stolen vehicles and illegal firearms and ammunition in various areas of the greater province.

Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba says residents need to know that they can walk safely in their streets, live comfortably in their homes without fear of invasion and harm, and raise their children safely without the threat of gangs and drug peddlers.

Mashaba said collaborations between national and municipal public services across political divides that keep South Africans safe are important, and they indicate an important shift towards political maturity.

“Since coming into office in August 2016, Johannesburg’s multiparty administration has taken serious steps to eradicate crime in the city, knowing that without doing so, the city cannot hope to be a place where people can live safely and happily,” he said.

“Residents of Johannesburg need to know that they can walk safely in their streets, live comfortably in their homes without fear of invasion and harm, and raise their children safely without the threat of gangs and drug peddlers.”

The mayor also said the additional 1 500 Metro police officers will increase the City’s policing and allow South African police to carry out their duties more efficiently.

“However, the reality is that local, provincial and national government simply cannot fight crime in isolation – collaboration is essential for sweeping reforms in crime eradication and essential for national harmony.

“The launch of this operation is a step in the right direction for ensuring the safety of our residents and those of province as a whole.”
