Rory is a top scorer off and on the pitch

Rory Bloy reflects on playing soccer abroad after feeling the sport has limited opportunities in the country.

Nothing can dampen Rory Bloy’s spirit when it comes to football.
The 24-year-old has always had the desire to play soccer in the United States of America and he realised his dream after receiving a sponsorship in 2019.
He plays for The XP Arena Club in South Africa which is run by Alexander and Nicholas Stothard in Magaliessig, Fourways.

He said his passion was recognised by the Stothard’s who played a major role in fulfilling his dream of being a football player in America.
“They took a team of us to Las Vegas to play in a college showcase and that is where I got scouted and got the scholarship to play at Carol’s College in Montana. I was their second-highest goal scorer ever in the programme’s history. Then, halfway through my college career in 2021/2022, Alexander and Nicholas asked me if I’d be interested in joining the club and because I love football, I took the opportunity with both hands.”

Bloy has been contemplating the idea of pursuing a soccer career abroad. He believes that there is a lack of direction and support in South Africa to follow a successful path in the game and was eager to explore options overseas.

He is proud of what he has achieved so far in football and that is why he mentors aspirant footballers at The XP Arena Club.

“I was lucky enough to be able to fulfil my dream but with the goal that one day I will own a premier soccer league club so that I can give the same opportunities to players in our country. The XP Arena is a good start though. I love the club because a lot of kids benefit from it and are guided by legends in the game. I have joined the behind-the-scenes of the club and no longer play even though I get sad sometimes as I miss being on the field.”
The XP Arena opened its doors in 2022 as a 5-a-side football facility targeting sports fanatics from Fourways and its surrounding areas. Night leagues are played on Wednesday and Thursday.
