Five things to know about the Oscar Pistorius trial
Day one of the Oscar Pistorius trial has come to an end.
Here are the most important points about the day in court:
- The court proceedings were delayed because one of the two interpreters assigned to the case had an ‘unforeseen and unexplained’ issue that kept the interpreter from arriving.
- Pistorius pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him, which included the murder of Reeva Steenkamp and discharging a firearm recklessly twice in the past.
- Michell Burger was called to the stand to testify as the first witness, a resident at the neighbouring Silver Stream Estate.
- Burger testified that she woke up to a woman screaming for help and a man’s voice shouting, which also later turned to cries for help. Burger stated it sounded like blood curdling screams – she refused to describe it as just a scream.
- It seemed as though Pistorius’ lawyer attempted to coerce Burger to change her testimony by getting her to only answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. She stood by her testimony referring to her previous statements.
Court resumes at 9.30am on Tuesday.
