Urban circus stars arrive at Monte
MONTECASINO - Fresh off the plane, circus act Cirque Eloize iD announced their arrival at Montecasino with a surprise performance.
For 20 years Cirque Eloize has been taking the public and critics by storm in more than 440 countries around the world. This is the first time the revolutionary circus show has visited South Africa.
Mariya Moneva, tour manager for Cirque Eloize iD said the show was different to a traditional circus in that it was more intimate. The show is a blend of circus arts and urban dance set in the heart of the city with a soundtrack created by composers Jean-Phi Goncalves and Alex McMahon. “We have such a cool, contemporary soundtrack and a really multi-talented and versatile cast,” Moneva said. Among the cast are, Jeremy St Jean and Justine Methe-Crozat, hand to hand artists who both hail from Canada. Both performers agreed that their journey to Cirque Eloize was quite natural because they had always wanted to be involved in the circus arts.
St Jean and Methe-Crozat said they were eager to tour Johannesburg during their free time between performances and want to visit the Apartheid Museum and the Lion Park. Emi Vauthey from Switzerland, Cirque Eloize’s resident contortionist explained that she had a background in rhythmic gymnastics and ballet.
“When I was 10 I saw a show by Cirque Eloize and knew I wanted to be part of their team,” she said. “We travel for 10 months out of the year but I love it. My favourite place in the world so far is Tokyo,” she added. “I would have said Johannesburg but I haven’t been able to see it yet.”
The Cirque Eloize show opens at the Teatro at Montecasino on 19 August and will run until 14 September.
