Fourways High pupil receives eight medals at Nedbank Disabled Championships
FOURWAYS - Fighting spirit of disabled Fourways High School's Grade 9 pupil, Shannon Martins, wins medals at the Nedbank Disabled Championships in Bloemfontein.
Grade 9 pupil of Fourways High School, Shannon Martins, participated in the Nedbank Disabled Championships in Bloemfontein on 21 and 22 March as part of the Central Gauteng team.
Martins lost her right leg in a freak accident when she was two years old after a ceramic water fountain toppled onto her and damaged the main artery in her right leg.
“Bypass surgery was done [during] the first operation to try and save her leg, but after eight operations, the doctors stated that in the ninth operation they had to amputate my daughter’s leg above the knee as the muscles were badly damaged… It was very difficult for her in the beginning but she soon learnt to accept the unfortunate situation that she was placed in and has always been a fighter and never gives up,” Martin’s mother, Louise said.
Martins was awarded eight gold medals for her individual events and two gold medals for the Gauteng team relay.
