Beverley gets the park it deserves
BEVERLEY – Beverley AH residents now have a safe and green space to enjoy and relax in as a new park is created in the area, thanks to the efforts of volunteers.
Another suburb gets a little greener!
Beverley Agricultural Holdings (AH) reached a milestone recently after an open space of ground on Mulbarton Road was converted into a park on 17 November.
Since there is no real green area in the suburb, most residents had to travel in their vehicles to the Lonehill Park, roughly four kilometres away, to walk their dogs.
“I started engaging with the relevant officials over four and a half years ago to get the approval as there is no park in Beverley [in] Ward 94,” said David Foley, the ward councillor for the area. “Once the approval was received, myself and the estate manager of the Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) Maryke Blewitt, began planning the layout and I engaged with various stakeholders and communities requesting donations.
“The plan is to fence off the, put the kerbing in place, create a pedestrian walkway and a paved parking area.”
The groundwork started on 15 and 16 of November thanks to Simply Gardens and Grant Griebenouw who donated a TLB [digger] and dump truck. Building rubble and garden refuse, which was unscrupulously dumped in the area, was removed while various rockery areas and garden beds were created.
On 17 November, about 60 people planted over 100 donated trees, plants and shrubs, all being indigenous to ensure birds’ habitats in the area, thanks to Des Gower, LRA, Andris Theart and Plants Central.
“Many thanks to Albert Louw for a kind donation of Lasher tools as in picks, spades, forks and wheelbarrows to help with the task at hand. It was extremely hot on the day and the rain that started on Monday was most welcome.
Foley concluded, “We will continue to work with the community and the LRA to make it a beautiful place to spend some time in to relax.”
