PICS: Domestic workers in Fourways learn first aid

FOURWAYS – The domestic workers who form part of Hirsch's Domestic Networking learned life-saving skills from Warren Hastings of Life Fourways Hospital

Hirsch’s Fourways recently hosted a basic first-aid awareness talk with the chief paramedic, Warren Hastings from Life Fourways Hospital, who has spoken at previous upliftment sessions.

Hastings spoke to the domestics about the importance of keeping themselves safe before giving assistance to others. That would mean it is advisable to invest in a first-aid kit, including gloves and other necessities for their homes and places of employment.

The domestic workers had the various types of wounds explained, how to handle them and what the best course of action would be. Fractures and other health concerns were discussed, such as strokes, heart attacks and their symptoms. Hastings also incorporated the previous talks and demos regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

“Time is the all-important thing and with speedy, correct assistance most cases diminish in severity,” said Sharron Dingle the public relations officer for Hirsch’s.

The ladies were also given a chance to inspect an ambulance up close, which they really enjoyed, compliments of the NEMS paramedics who were very patient.

The day was also an opportunity for Hirsch’s to hand over the last monthly Domestic of the Month finalist certificates in the lead up to the annual celebratory Domestic High Tea on 4 December, to celebrate the monthly winners and their employers.

“We had arranged with Beauty Chakabva, Nombeko Mpofu and Ephenia Mokgoshi’s employers that they attend but they were not told and they were totally taken completely by surprise. It was also with a sad goodbye we bid the very friendly public relations officer, Jane Lamprey from Life Hospital, a teary farewell. Lamprey will be retiring next month.

“We are having our final Christmas network to which everyone is invited.”

The entry fee will be a toy, a toiletry for a senior or pet food. The Fourways network will be getting these delivered to three charities as a give-back for Christmas and the talk will be What If? by Debbie Botha from Core Training Solutions.
