Sports Alive backs local girls
DIEPSLOOT – The Youth Alive Sports Project is calling for donations of sports bras and sanitary towels, which the organisation will donate to adolescent girls in the Diepsloot informal settlement.
The Youth Alive Sports Project is calling for donations from the public before the holiday season begins.
The organisation, which was founded earlier this year by Johannes Molepo with the assistance of Precious Hlaka and Tamlyn Stevens, is asking for donations of sanitary towels and sports bras which will be distributed to adolescent girls from Diepsloot informal settlement. Youth Alive works to support soccer players and athletes in the informal settlement through a number of programmes and is particularly focused on adolescent girls who face a number of difficulties as they grow up.
“The reason we started Youth Alive is because we identified challenges that the girl child faces when participating in sport,” explained Molepo. “Those obstacles force them to even quit participating in various sporting codes of their choice.”

The non-profit organisation currently runs two programmes in the informal settlement – the Active Girls Programme and the JD Tournament. The former collects necessary items such as sanitary pads and sports bras from donors and then redistributes them to girls and young women from the informal settlement, while the latter is soccer-based and aims to keep youngsters in the sport by providing opportunities for older adolescent players, both boys and girls.
“The main challenges we identified [in adolescent girls participation in sports] are a lack of sanitary towels and sports bras due to socio-economic issues and affordability.”
To address these challenges, Youth Alive collects donations, fundraises and establishes sponsorships that can get these necessary items to those who need them the most. “This is our way of supporting these girls to advance in their sports careers without any worries of comfort,” Molepo added.
“We also provide guidance to them through our mentorship programme.”
He asked that anyone who wants to donate, to please contact the Youth Alive Sports Project directly or visit their Facebook page.
