Fourways High looks back on a wonderful 2019

FOURWAYS – Fourways High School celebrates its successes and bids farewell to loved principal.

As the year comes to a close, the staff at Fourways High School have shared some of the highlights from throughout the year. The school also bid farewell to principal Gwendolyne de Bruyn as she retires.

On her departure, De Bruyn shared some of the lessons she has learned. “Having a job you love is indeed a blessing. Nothing comes easily, you have to work hard at being successful. Lessons are sent to you to test you so that you are able to cope with issues later on. Never presume you know how the other person feels until you walk in their shoes. Never walk away from a challenge. It may mean a turning point in your life.

“Your life path is never set, expect a few changes, roadblocks and detours. Sometimes there are challenges that you are faced with it can take many years before you understand the value of them.”

Here are some of the highlights from the year:

• Grade 8’s participated in a swimming camp and Midmar took place from 7 to 9 February with some Fourways High School swimmers finishing by three minutes faster compared to the previous year.

• Team FHS ended third overall in the school orienteering competition.

• Learners made it into Team SA for the international leg of the Championship of Performing Arts.

• The thrilling production of Jekyll and Hyde took place during the months of April and May 2019 – a phenomenal musical experience through to the suspenseful storyline.

• The 1st Team hockey boys finished in 10th position in the A section of the prestigious Aitken Trophy. This is on the back of winning promotion in 2018 through a play-off match.

• On 25 and 26 May, Fourways High was given the honour of hosting the largest primary school hockey tournament, with over 750 boys and girls from 50 teams. The festival plays host to the most talented U12 and U13 hockey boys and girls from North West, Eastern Gauteng, Southern Gauteng, Northern Gauteng as well as Mpumalanga. Fourways High School has officially been appointed by Southern Gauteng Primary Schools Hockey as the 2020 host of this event.

• Senior 1st team boys soccer won the final of their soccer tour on penalties. A most momentous achievement for girls’ soccer at Fourways High as the team played their first-ever official league game. Their opponent was Northriding High, where both the U15 and 1st team won their matches.

• Fourways High School debaters won the Wits University Cub Grill Debating tournament. They were unbeaten in all rounds and only lost two judges in the final.
