Covid-19: Mary Oppenheimer and daughters donate R1 billion to Solidarity Fund
Money donated to the Solidarity Fund will be used to prevent and detect the coronavirus, care for those who need medical care and support those who have been affected by the pandemic.
Mary Oppenheimer, the daughter of late South African mining magnate Harry Oppenheimer, and her daughters have donated R1 billion to the Solidarity Fund in the fight against the coronavirus.
A statement by the family on 1 April said, “We join all South Africans in expressing our profound hope that, together, we can overcome this grave challenge to our country and to the world… we realise that until this pandemic passes, our country will experience enormous difficulties and hardships.”
Money donated to the Solidarity Fund will be used to prevent and detect the coronavirus, care for those who need medical care and support those who have been affected by the pandemic.
“My daughters and I have thought long and hard about where we could make the greatest difference in this fight and have decided to support the humanitarian needs of everyone living in South Africa. So we think that it is the Solidarity Fund which is most aligned to our concerns about basic needs, food, medicine, general care and gender abuse.”
Nicky Oppenheimer, Mary’s brother, also launched a R1-billion investment called the South African Future Trust, which will assist small businesses.
