DOUGLASDALE – Police arrested more than 130 suspects over the weekend during multiple joint operations in various communities.

A number of police stations of the Joburg West sub-district were involved in the arrest of more than 130 people between August 13 and August 15.

Douglasdale, Diepsloot, Florida, Roodepoort, Linden, Randburg and Honeydew police conducted operations throughout the area.

The spokesperson of Douglasdale police, Captain Mpho Tshetlhane said one person was arrested in an operation held in Florida for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“The suspects were arrested for different crimes ranging from rape, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, contravention of the Disaster Management Act, assault to cause grievous bodily harm, assault common, possession of suspected stolen property, shoplifting, and reckless and negligent driving,” she said.

On the same weekend, Douglasdale police arrested 31 suspects in the area.

Suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from fraud, possession of marijuana, drunk driving and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Tshetlhane said all the arrested suspects were to appear in the Randburg and Roodepoort magistrates’ courts soon. She said the multiple arrests were an indication that police were determined to keep the community safe.

Police are still encouraging community members to keep reporting all criminal activities in their areas by phoning the police on 011 699 1300 or on 08600 10111. Alternatively, they can use MySAPS to send anonymous tip-offs or go to the nearest police station.
