Dainfern College head girl Kate Weir participated in the 50th World Irish Dance Championships in Northern Ireland in Belfast.
The competition took place from April 10 to April 17 and had thousands of participants. Due to Covid-19, the prestigious dance competition had been cancelled the previous two years.
The youngster, along with her team from Robinson Dance Studio, flew the South African flag high. They obtained third place in their division and the world in general. “I feel enormously privileged to have been part of the senior team that placed third in the biggest World Irish Dance Championships ever held. We were one of two Robinson studios teams that made history for South African Irish dancing with a podium finish,” Kate said.

“Although I was nervous before competing, I was super excited to perform with people who had become close friends.”
The 17-year-old has been dancing for 12 years, since she was five years old. She was inspired by her sister who is currently dancing professionally in the USA.
Kate’s parents describe her as hardworking, kind and committed. “Her commitment and attitude have been exemplary in the years leading up to the big event. The first term of this year was chaotic for Kate, with extremely late nights, juggling her dance commitment with her responsibilities as head girl of Dainfern College, as well as her academic workload for nine subjects,” said her mom, Fiona Weir.
The Grade 12 learner has now put her dancing on hold to focus on her schoolwork. She recently completed her SAT exams for entrance into USA colleges and hopes to pursue a career in business or medicine.
