Curro leads sustainable charge

Curro Fourways and Chartwell Preschools are transforming everyday waste into valuable learning resources, setting a new standard for early childhood education and inspiring a greener generation.

As the world is increasingly grappling with environmental concerns, Curro Fourways and Chartwell Preschools are taking admirable ‘baby steps’ towards a more sustainable future, proving that even the smallest actions can have a big impact.

Their recent initiative, focused on repurposing humble brown paper delivery bags, is not only reducing waste but also fostering environmental consciousness in their youngest learners.

The inspiration for this project stemmed from a common sight in today’s communities: overflowing bins filled with packaging from popular delivery services like 60/60, Dash, and Pick n Pay.

These services, while a boon for busy parents, contribute significantly to household waste. Instead of seeing this as a problem, the schools saw an opportunity.

Angie Bezuidenhout, head of Curro Fourways and Chartwell Preschools, explained that the journey is just beginning, but the potential impact of teaching sustainability from such a young age is profound.

“Embedding these values early on may very well shape a generation that is more conscious of the environment and more committed to protecting our planet.”

The initiative, launched in Term 2, involved inviting parents to donate their used brown delivery bags.

“This project has not only inspired creativity and environmental awareness, but it has also sparked an important shift in how we think about our teaching resources. As we move forward, we are continuing to ask ourselves: How can we approach activities more sustainably? Where can we reuse? How can we better instill a sense of environmental responsibility in our children?”
