Con Brio Cares gears up for prematurity awareness month

As prematurity awareness month approaches, Con Brio Cares is rallying support to provide essential mom and baby bags to families at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, and Witkoppen Clinic.

November is prematurity awareness month, a time to highlight the challenges faced by premature babies and their families.

In recognition of this important month, Con Brio Cares, a local non-profit organisation, is starting an initiative to distribute mom and baby bags to families in hospitals, including Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, and Witkoppen Clinic.

Elindi van den Heever, the founder of the organisation, explained that the purpose of this day was to raise awareness about preterm birth, and the challenges faced by infants born before 37 weeks of gestation and their families. “I have been involved with prematurity month, even before Con Brio Cares started.

It was important for me, and the co-founder, to keep this work going. There are very few resources for parents with premature babies, and these months in the hospital can be incredibly tough. We want to offer help and comfort to these families.”

The mom and baby bags contain carefully selected items to support both mother and child. These include beanies, booties, jerseys, blankets, wet wipes, menstrual pads, soap, deodorant, creams, and toys, depending on donations received.

“Having a premature baby can be very costly, and families need the right clothing and resources so they can focus on their baby’s wellbeing,” explained Van den Heever.

This year, Con Brio Cares aims to distribute at least 60 mom and baby bags, along with several standard baby bags. Van den Heever said they hope these donations will bring comfort and joy to families as their little ones fight for their lives.

“We want to help ease some of the burdens families face during these tough times.”

The organisation is calling on the public to contribute items. “We support preemie babies throughout the year, not just in November, so these donations are needed year-round.”

Van den Heever also thanked everyone who has been donating towards this initiative, noting that she is already receiving positive feedback from the public.

For families currently navigating the journey of having a premature baby, Van den Heever offers a heartfelt message: “Your baby is a fighter. We know you’re scared and tired, but your little one will pull through. Once they’re home and past the worst, they will grow up with an amazing personality.

You don’t have to do this alone.”
