Gymnast leaps towards the national stage
From cartwheels in preschool to provincial colours and national stage dreams, young gymnast Madison Todd is leaping higher with every routine.
From swinging on preschool bars to preparing for the National Gymnastics Championships, Fourways gymnast Madison Todd (13) has turned her childhood energy into a passion that is taking her to new heights in the sport.
Madison already achieved remarkable milestones in the world of gymnastics. She began gymnastics in 2020, when she was in the first grade, and by the age of 9, she had earned her junior colours.
Last year, she proudly received her provincial colors, and, more recently, placed third on beam at the provincial competition. Now, she is focused on the National Gymnastics Championships, scheduled for October 7.

“I was very energetic, when I was little,” Madison shared, “and would play on the bars at my preschool. I loved doing cartwheels and backbends all the time. My mom saw this as potential and decided to take me to gymnastics.”

That early spark soon grew into a deep love for the sport. Madison thrives on the variety and challenge gymnastics offers. “There are so many different things in gymnastics, from tumbling on the floor to difficult skills on the beam. I love that there are so many different skills to learn.”
The journey hasn’t been without challenges. Strength training on tough days has tested her determination. “I try to push through and remind myself that I won’t master the skills without the strength.”
For her upcoming National Gymnastics Championships, she hopes to improve her scores. “I am aiming to get higher scores, more awards, and to learn harder skills so that I can compete at a higher level next year.”

For her mother, Lindsay, the journey has been just as rewarding to witness. “Supporting Madison in her gymnastics journey has been very rewarding. It has taught her discipline, perseverance, and resilience, and has built her self-confidence. Watching her push through when things get tough is inspiring.

She doesn’t give up, even when things don’t come easily.”
She also has advice for other parents. “Remember that your child’s journey is theirs, not yours, and every child’s journey looks different. Encourage them to enjoy the process as much as the results.
Their worth is not defined by scores or medals, but by their effort and love for the sport.”
