Streetlights burning 24/7? Here’s how to report them
Constantly-on streetlights are more than just a waste of power; they’re a sign that something’s wrong. City Power explains why this happens and offers guidance on how residents can help.
If you’ve noticed a streetlight burning during broad daylight in your neighbourhood, you’re not alone. The problem, which wastes electricity and signals a potential fault, is a common one across Johannesburg.
According to the power utility’s website, the cause for the lights to burn 24/7 lies with photocells, which play an important role in ensuring that streetlights are switched on during the night and switched off during the day.

“When photocells are vandalised, the streetlights malfunction, leaving residents in the dark. In some cases, streetlights may stay on during the day when photocells have been vandalised and damaged. This puts a strain on the network as it has a negative impact on energy efficiency.”
