City Parks clears away debris from Lonehill Park

After months of lingering debris, the park finally gets the clean-up it deserved, and it is all thanks to City Parks and Ward 94 councillor David Foley’s watchful eye.

Residents of Lonehill can finally enjoy a tidier Lonehill Park area, following the removal of debris left behind by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo a few months ago.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley explained that the recent clean-up wasn’t about weeds growing out of control; it was rather about the material left after previous maintenance. “A while ago, City Parks came with their big harvesters to clear the dam, but some of the debris was just left sitting there. I’m really happy to see it’s finally all gone.”

The removal work began on November 21, and Foley said he planned to visit the site personally to ensure everything was properly cleared.

The dam is currently dealing with another Kariba weed outbreak, which worsens by the day. Kariba weed is a free-floating aquatic fern native to southeastern Brazil. It is considered one of the world’s most problematic aquatic weeds due to its rapid growth and devastating impact on freshwater ecosystems, according to Wikipedia.

When asked about the disposal of the leftover material, Foley said it likely went straight to the city dump, rather than to garden refuse.

Foley, who also chairs his residential complex, says keeping an eye on community issues is a full-time job. He noted the importance of following up on projects, to make sure they’re done right.

The clean-up marks a small but meaningful win for residents, showing that careful oversight and persistence can pay off when it comes to maintaining public spaces.
