Mark Scott, vice president of merchandise for Massmart, which oversees Walmart’s operations in South Africa, spoke to the excitement surrounding the opening. “The philosophy around Walmart is an everyday low-price, and that means that customers should be saving money every day, not just on days like today. On a basket of goods, you will save more money with us than with any of the other retailers out there.”
Scott also spoke about the convenience the new store brings to shoppers. “Whether it be instore or on demand through our local app, we will be able to save you money on those essentials that are so important to every South African household.”

When asked why they chose Fourways Mall, Scott said it was a strategic stance. “Fourways is close to home, our head office is based in Johannesburg, so we can really get into the detail of what we want to build for our customers. The mall has a great customer base, is saturated with local businesses, and surrounded by residential areas.” He added that the area also showed strong potential for e-commerce adoption.
Despite being a first-day opening, Scott was delighted by the turnout. “We had the Clearwater opening last week, now we have Fourways today, and we are very, very, very excited about the turnout. Thank you, Fourways, thank you South Africa for coming and trusting us.”
Scott emphasised Walmart’s commitment to South Africa. “Apart from an international assortment, we’re partnered with over 15 000 unique articles that are South African.
“We’ve also employed over 86 South Africans in this store alone. Walmart has given us an opportunity to build a store for South Africa by South Africans.”
As the festive season approaches, shoppers can expect special promotions. “We are an everyday low-price business, so everything should help you save money, but we do have a couple of Black Friday deals on for the weekend. We have some nice products for the kitchen, for the kids, and for Christmas. Come and give us a chance, we really do want to save you money on your essentials.”
