JRA begins removing Lombardy Road rubble

After weeks of concern, Broadacres residents say they are relieved as the Johannesburg Roads Agency begins clearing rubble along Lombardy Road.

Broadacres residents are expressing relief and satisfaction after the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) began removing rubble along Lombardy Road, following weeks of complaints about alleged dumping in the area.

The rubble, which had accumulated along the roadside near Homestead Estate and towards Bushwillow and Cedar Avenue West, was initially linked by residents to ongoing roadworks and resurfacing in the area.

Concerns were raised about environmental impacts and the increase in illegal dumping.

Residents have now welcomed the intervention, saying their concerns have finally been acknowledged.

“Very happy that we were heard and action was taken,” said Chantelle from Homestead Estate Homeowner Association.

JRA also provided clarity on the situation. According to HOD: Infrastructure Development, Kwazelela Mcetywa, the agency had not initially been made aware of the complaints.

“JRA was not alerted and informed of the complaints from the residents of Lombardy Road.”

Mcetywa explained that the material in question formed part of the resurfacing process and had been temporarily stored in line with project requirements.

“The contractor was permitted to temporarily store the milled material in a dedicated area, which would in turn be removed at the end of the contract.”

He added that the agency is now actively relocating the material.

“The Johannesburg Roads Agency is currently in the process of relocating the milled chips to other gravel roads.”

Mcetywa also noted that not all the waste found at the site could be attributed to the project.

“Additionally, it has been observed that building rubble has been unlawfully disposed of by other parties unknown to JRA, which does not fall within the JRA’s or the contractor’s responsibilities.”
