Residents call for pipe replacement amid persistent leaks
Ongoing pipe bursts in Sunninghill have prompted renewed calls for long-term infrastructure upgrades.
Residents and local leadership in Sunninghill are calling for the replacement of ageing water infrastructure along Peltier Drive, as recurring pipe bursts continue to disrupt the area.
The latest leak has once again drawn attention to what many believe is a long-standing problem, with residents reporting frequent pipe failures over the past two years.
Concerns are growing that ongoing repairs are only providing temporary relief, while the underlying issue remains unresolved.

According to Tracy Kensey of the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association, the repeated bursts point to deteriorating infrastructure rather than isolated incidents.
She said the pattern has become increasingly difficult for residents to ignore.
“We have seen repeated pipe bursts along Peltier Drive for more than two years now, sometimes occurring as often as twice a month. This is clearly not just bad luck; it shows that the infrastructure is failing and needs to be properly addressed.”

Residents said the constant leaks have not only interrupted the water supply but have also caused damage to the road and the surrounding environment, adding to frustration within the community.
Ward 96 councillor Vino Reddy echoed these concerns, urging authorities to shift focus from reactive repairs to a more sustainable solution.

“We cannot continue relying on temporary fixes while residents are dealing with ongoing disruptions. I am appealing to Joburg Water to consider replacing the pipes in this area to provide a long-term solution.”
In addition to infrastructure concerns, the most recent burst has raised safety issues, with exposed pipes and cables left visible at the site. Residents have questioned the delay in fully restoring and securing the affected area.
The repeated incidents have intensified calls for decisive intervention, with both residents and local leadership emphasising that replacing the pipes may be the only way to prevent further leaks and restore stability to the area.
