Curro Douglasdale Primary School is proud to turn 10

Over the years, the school has navigated challenges tied to its residential location and today stands ready to celebrate another milestone: the third cohort of Grade 7 graduates.

Curro Douglasdale Primary School hosted its 10th anniversary celebration on April 10 at its premises. Learners, teachers, and staff gathered to commemorate a decade of growth from a pre-school into a fully established primary school.

The reception area was decorated with blue and yellow balloons representing the school colours, stretching all the way to where the celebration was held. Learners showed excitement as they participated in the celebrations, having prepared a variety of performances for their teachers and peers.

The school was founded by the late Sonja Davie in 2016 as a pre-school catering to younger children. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the idea to extend into a primary school was introduced. The school is now preparing to graduate its third group of Grade 7 learners, marking another milestone in its development.

According to executive head Dane Gabin, one of the initial challenges the school faced was traffic congestion due to its location in a residential area, an issue that has since been addressed.

“The school has gone through a remarkable journey. In my two years here, I’ve seen how it has grown from a pre-school into a thriving primary school, it’s a testament to its growth and resilience,” said Gabin.

The programme began with a choir performance by learners from Grade 4 to Grade 7, followed by music items and dance performances by various grades. Learners also delivered speeches, including Grade R learner Hope Madondo.

Mika Seetaram, a Grade 4 learner said,“ The teachers here helped me gain confidence and encouraged me to do my best. They are supportive, they notice our efforts and they teach us in a fun clear way.”

Teachers surprised everyone with a remarkable performance as well.

“My highlight for the day as we celebrate 10 years was the dance by the teachers. It’s good to show the children that we are not just adults who will be sitting and directing them but we also move with them and we do everything together as a team,” said Refiloe Luvhimbu, the phase head.
