University applications for 2027 open across SA
With applications now open, prospective students are encouraged to act early, choose wisely, and embrace the journey from matric to meaningful future careers.
As the 2026 academic year unfolds, thousands of South African learners, both current matriculants and those taking a gap year, are preparing for one of the most important steps in their academic journey: Applying for university admission in 2027.
Most universities and colleges across South Africa have opened applications from April 1 to September 30, but they have until June 30 for competitive programmes.
Tim Michael Verne, the national public relations and communications manager from NewBridge Graduate Institute (Fourways), said the key is finding an accredited academic institution, which best aligns with your preferred course of study, has a strong support system in place, and facilitates an environment where you can make new friends and gain practical experience aimed to help you succeed in the world of work.

“Matric is such an important milestone, marking the end of a long school journey. However, this is just the beginning of finding out who you really are. Change is inevitable. You can choose to ignore it or embrace it.
“Taking this step, from high school graduate to first year student, is a big decision. That’s why it is important to choose a tertiary institution that follows a holistic approach, focused on growing future thinkers, leaders, and change makers, equipping students with a competitive advantage in the world of work.”
Abygail van der Merwe, second-year student from NewBridge Graduate Institute (Fourways), advised the class of 2027 that there are times you might sit in class and wonder if you are good enough or smart enough to be there. “That thought happens to everyone.
You’re not expected to know everything on your first day. Feeling confused does not mean you’re behind, it just means your brain is warming up. You didn’t get here by accident. You belong here, confusion, questions, and all.”

Sometimes, taking the leap from high school to tertiary studies is driven by curiosity. The next step toward discovering who you are, repurposing your potential into possibility, and moving forward with confidence toward your future.
“Deciding to study further is not about having everything figured out,” added Verne. “It’s about equipping yourself with the skills needed for an ever-changing world and wanting to learn more to grow into the best possible version of yourself. Don’t just think about today, dream about your future.”
The department of basic education advised that, to apply to a specific university or college, you need to obtain and fill out that institution’s application form. You will need to supply either or both of your Grade 11 final results and your Grade 12 June results.

A non-refundable application fee is usually required, which ranges from R100 to R550. Please note that some universities in the KZN make use of the central application office (CAO) for new applications.
