Sunninghill residents renew calls to slow dangerous traffic on Nanyuki Road

With speeding vehicles, growing congestion, and increasing risks to pedestrians, the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association says urgent traffic-calming measures are needed before tragedy strikes Nanyuki Road.

Sunninghill residents are once again raising concerns over dangerous speeding and growing traffic volumes along Nanyuki Road, warning that the situation continues to place motorists, pedestrians, and nearby residents at risk.

The road, which serves as a major link between Barbeque Downs and Sandton, has become increasingly congested as traffic from surrounding developments, particularly Waterfall City, continues to spill into Sunninghill’s residential streets.

Tracey Kensey, suburb manager of the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association, said the volume of vehicles using the route daily has become overwhelming.

“This section of road, as you can see, takes an enormous amount of traffic. The issue we have is speeding vehicles along here.”

According to Kensey, the association has already approached Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for assistance, launching a petition calling for traffic-calming measures to improve safety along the busy route.

“We have asked JRA, and we’ve done a petition to get assistance from JRA to put traffic-calming measures in place. We are now going to have to look at a private partnership because JRA do not have the funds to assist us.”

Residents say speeding vehicles and constant congestion have made it increasingly difficult for those living along side streets to safely enter Nanyuki Road, especially during peak traffic hours.

“What we need to do is slow down the traffic so that the people living on the side roads are actually able to get access into Nanyuki Road.”

She added that the road has become increasingly dangerous for pedestrians and residents using the area daily.

“We’ve got pedestrians, we’ve got dog walkers, so it’s a very dangerous section of road.”

The renewed concerns come amid ongoing complaints from residents about deteriorating road infrastructure, increasing rat-running through residential streets and frequent accidents linked to speeding and reckless driving.

JRA acknowledged receiving the petition. Ayanda Ntshingila, JRA head of department: Public relations and stakeholder engagement, acknowledged the reception of the petition from the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association, but gave no further comment. More will be published when received.
