Months long traffic light failure causes chaos at busy Fourways intersection
A busy Fourways intersection has become a daily nightmare for commuters, with malfunctioning traffic lights forcing pointsmen to step in for months.
Motorists travelling through the intersection of Winnie Mandela Drive, Kingfisher Drive, and Montecasino Boulevard continue to face daily traffic headaches, as traffic lights at the busy junction remain out of order months after the problem first emerged.
The malfunctioning traffic lights have resulted in severe congestion, particularly during peak hours, leaving commuters frustrated and raising concerns about road safety.

Resident Mpho Molefe said the ongoing problem has had a significant impact on commuters.
“Every day I sit in traffic because of these broken traffic lights.
The intersection becomes extremely congested, and the lack of traffic control causes confusion among drivers. We need a permanent solution because we have been dealing with this problem for months now.”
Stephanie McCarthy shared frustration amongst many road users. “It is disappointing that the traffic lights have been left unrepaired for such a long time. This is a busy route, used by thousands of motorists daily.
The congestion is frustrating, especially for people trying to get to work, school, or appointments on time.”
Fridoline Gcwanini said residents deserve answers from authorities responsible for maintaining the intersection.

“Three months is far too long for traffic lights on a major road to remain out of order.
The delays are frustrating and the congestion affects the entire area. Residents deserve an explanation and a timeline for when the lights will finally be repaired.”
The intersection has been the subject of repeated complaints from residents and road users, with concerns over traffic light failures on Winnie Mandela Drive dating back several months.
Similar concerns have previously been raised across Fourways as motorists continue to battle recurring traffic signal outages on key routes.
To prevent a complete block of traffic, OUTsurance pointsmen have been stationed at the intersection daily, directing traffic from 06:30 to 17:30.

The team operates on a shift system, with pointsmen rotating three times a day to keep traffic moving through one of Fourways’ busiest routes.
“Our efforts have become a familiar sight for motorists who rely on the crossing to access surrounding residential areas, schools, shopping centres, and business hubs,” said Outsurance pointsman Ndumiso Shabalala.
