Fourways strength icon curls his way to 3 national gold medals
At 64, Gary Katzen continues to defy expectations, claiming three gold medals at the 2026 Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl National Championships while inspiring others to pursue their goals regardless of age.
Multiple South African national champion Gary Katzen once again proved that age is no obstacle to success after securing three gold medals at the 2026 Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl National Championships, held at the Onomo Hotel in Durban on June 20.
Competing against athletes from all nine provinces, the 64-year-old claimed first place in both the masters 100kg strict arm curl and masters 100kg freestanding curl divisions.

He also won the open 100kg freestanding curl division, with an impressive 75kg lift.
For Katzen, the victories represent more than just another addition to an already decorated career. “Winning these national titles is incredibly rewarding and a proud moment for me. At 64 years of age, it proves that with dedication, discipline, and consistency, age should never be a barrier to achieving your goals.”
He described the championships as highly competitive, with the standard of competition continuing to improve as more athletes take up the sport.
“The competition was extremely competitive, with athletes travelling from all nine provinces to compete. The standard was very high, which made the victories even more meaningful. While I’m happy with the result, I’m always striving to improve and know I still have more to achieve.”

Katzen’s success spans several strength disciplines, having also earned national titles in powerlifting, bodybuilding, and arm wrestling. He believes each sport has contributed to his development as a well-rounded strength athlete.
“Bodybuilding builds muscle size, symmetry, and conditioning, powerlifting develops maximum strength, arm wrestling focuses on grip strength, leverage, and tendon conditioning, while strict arm curl and freestanding curl demand precise technique, explosive arm strength, and discipline.
Together, they have helped me become a more complete strength athlete.”
He also welcomed the continued growth of strict arm curl and freestanding curl in South Africa, saying the increasing number of competitors from across the country is helping to raise the standard of the sport and create opportunities for future athletes.
Looking ahead, he hopes to defend his national titles, improve his lifting numbers, and represent South Africa internationally whenever the opportunity arises. He is also passionate about mentoring newcomers to the sport.
“My advice to aspiring competitors is simple: Be patient, stay disciplined, and never look for shortcuts. Success comes from years of consistent training, proper technique, good recovery, and believing in yourself. If you’re willing to put in the work, age or circumstances should never stop you from achieving your goals.”
