Sticking together for service delivery
CHARTWELL -Sally Baker, a resident of Chartwell North Estates is working with her ward councillor for ward 96, Matome Mafokwane to make her area a better place.
Baker explained that there are two pressing issues in Chartwell North Estates that needed urgent attention.
The first is the state of the roads. At present most of the roads in Chartwell North Estates are not tarred and need to be graded regularly.
Baker said, “Due to heavy rains the roads are now down to just bed rock. We’re not expecting tar roads but we just want our roads to be stabilised.”
Councillor Mafokwane conducted an inspection of the roads with a Johannesburg Roads Agency representative.
He said, “These roads were very recently graded and I notice a vast improvement from the condition they were in before the grading. When City of Joburg agencies make upgrades in areas
they are advised to work with members of the community so that the community is satisfied with the work that was done. It seems
that in this case the residents are not satisfied with the end
product so I will have to look into this.”
According to Baker another pressing issue in Chartwell North Estates are frequent power outages due to maintenance by Eskom.
She explained that the residents experienced power outages at least once a week and were most often not notified before hand.
“I work chiefly off borehole water therefore if there is no power I also don’t have water for an entire day.”
Eskom spokesperson, Dikatso Mothae said that Eskom was only aware at this present time of one incident in Chartwell North Estates not of recurring incidents but they would look into the matter.
Councillor Mafokwane said, “It seems aging infrastructure is a big issue in Chartwell North Estates and I will be meeting with the various agencies involved to try and get to the bottom of this.”
