Lions Club brings Christmas cheer to children

FOURWAYS – The Lions Club Midrand held a Christmas party for orphaned children from the Midrand Child Welfare.

The party was held at the Groenvoer Country Market, Midrand.

Many of the 104 children that attended the event are orphans and some are from poor homes, and they are unlikely to receive gifts over Christmas. The children had a fun afternoon playing on the jumping castle and playing soccer and other games.

Cliff Hockings of the Lions Club said the club team was honoured to have an opportunity to make less privileged children smile. “In an ideal world, every child should receive gifts and eat their fill on Christmas Day, but for many of the children here today, that is usually not the case.”

Desiree Schutte, chairperson of Midrand Child Welfare, said the organisation was thankful that the Lions Club thought of giving gifts to orphaned and underprivileged children. “Midrand Child Welfare brought 50 children to the event and we invited 50 others from poor homes in Ivory Park,” she added.

Bob Engelbrecht played the role of Father Christmas for the day and his wife Linda was on hand to assist with giving presents to the children. Bob Engelbrecht said, “We wanted to have this party for the children because they do not have much for Christmas.”

Midrand Child Welfare currently has 998 orphans registered in their foster care system.
