Illegals arrested in raid

MSAWAWA - A total of 300 illegal immigrants were arrested during a raid in Msawawa informal settlement on 20 June.

The Douglasdale police conducted the raid in conjunction with Metro police, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Housing, the Red Ants, K9 unit and flying squad. Warrant officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police said the station had received numerous reports of armed robberies in Msawawa and had also received information that there was a suspected arms dealer living in the settlement who was harassing residents.

A resident who wanted to remain anonymous told Fourways Review that he had heard that a gun could be bought in Msawawa for R150.

Muthan said during the raid no firearms had been found and the police were in the process of determining whether the suspected arms dealer was one of the 300 illegal immigrants that had been arrested. Muthan said the illegal immigrants would be transported to Lindela Repatriation Centre to be detained before being deported.
