Madiba’s memory lives strong at Buttercup Preschool

LONEHILL – Teachers and pupils at Buttercup Preschool celebrated Madiba’s birthday with activities reflecting the legacy he has left to the children of the new South Africa.

Buttercup takes daily loving care of 200 children. Every pupil painted a unique picture of Mandela, and the portraits were hung from a rope stretching down the school’s public driveway, on proud display along with a vase of Protea flowers.

In the spirit of Madiba, the school, which is a past winner of the Leisure Options Best of Joburg award, has also run a food drive, collecting non-perishables for charity.

Mandela even featured in the school’s South Africa-themed school concert, which included a reenactment of his historic release from prison. Later in the day, the whole school will gather for a moment’s silence in commemoration of Madiba, followed by the sound of young voices singing the South Africa’s national anthem.
