Sharing a slice with many
FOURWAYS - An innovative new pizza company is aiming to bring the joy of pizza to underprivileged communities around Gauteng.
The Flab-U-Less Pizza company, based in Sharonlea near Fourways has created a 1.1 percent fat-free pizza made with fat-free mozzarella cheese, and a crust made from natural stone ground flour and a high fibre mix.
According to Jenny Roussouw of Flab-U-Less, the concept of the fat-free cheese and its application is patented worldwide which means that Flab-U-Less pizza is a proudly South African product. According to Roussouw the benefits of the fat-free pizzas are that they are high in protein, low in saturated fat, low in total fat, low in sugar and a good source of daily dietary fibre.
Roussouw explained that when they started selling their product at a number of school tuck shops around Gauteng, they noticed that there were many children who could not afford the pizza. “We approached them only to find out that some of them had never even tried a pizza and did not have a daily meal,” she said. With this in mind the Pizza-for-Smiles campaign was launched.
“Flab-U-Less have made it one of our missions to reach all the disadvantaged communities with hot, healthy pizzas and all we want back is a smile,” Roussouw said. The first pizza day was held in Rabie Ridge where 1 300 pizzas were baked fresh and hot. “It was an absolutely heart-warming experience to see toddlers, teenagers and gogos alike lining up for their first pizza ever,” Roussouw gushed.
Pizza-for-Smiles is looking for corporates to get involved with the initiative. “R10 gets them [disadvantaged communities] one pizza so as little as R1 000 can buy 100 pizza smiles,” Roussouw said.
