Police make mall robbery breakthrough

DOUGLASDALE - Police made a major breakthrough this week in the case of the recent spate of high profile mall robberies that have taken place.

According to Advocate Jean Berdou of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum, crack units of the national police crime intelligence and tactical response teams followed up on community-based intelligence by conducting a series of raids on suspected hideouts.

“Community members came forth with very useful, accurate and current information,” Berdou said.

A unit from the Honeydew cluster, which includes Douglasdale Police Station, conducted operations at two undisclosed addresses which resulted in the arrest of four suspects and the seizure of three AK47 assault rifles, a large number of ammunition and a stolen 9mm handgun.

Berdou said investigations are still at a sensitive stage but the arrests represent a major breakthrough in numerous recent cases of mall robbery.

He mentioned that the suspects are being held on a wide range of charges, including attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.

The suspects are specifically implicated in the robbery of a Cell-C store in Northgate Mall on 1 September.

“Once again this emphasises the successful partnership between the community and the police,” Berdou said.
