Burrow baby bounces back from surgery

LONEHILL - The Lonehill Bunnies are looking for a good home for three baby rabbit siblings, one of whom is recovering from surgery.

The group takes care of the animals in the farmyard of the Lonehill Fire Station, and while they have rehomed many of the rabbits, chickens and goats from the farmyard they still have many rabbits who are up for adoption.

The three siblings, who ideally need to be homed together, took their first steps out of the burrow on 1 April. Cristina Botef of the Lonehill Bunnies said that they had learnt the hard way, and that as soon as they see babies, they have to move in to catch them otherwise they can be bitten by rats, adult rabbits, targeted by birds of prey or even killed by humans.

By 9 April all three were caught by the group and taken into foster care. However, while in foster care, one of the rabbits started to develop a lump on his back. He was taken to the Lonehill Vet where is was discovered that the lump was, in fact, an abscess caused by a bite. The rabbit was operated on and received a number of stitches. He is now recovering and is in good spirits.

All three siblings are now up for adoption but are inseparable, so one home would be preferable.

Apart from the three siblings, Lonehill Bunnies has 36 other rabbits in foster care awaiting adoption. However, even with the large number of rabbits, Botef said the group takes the time to meet potential adoptees and conduct strict home checks so that the right rabbit can be matched to each individual environment.
