Outdoor Expo in Kyalami

KYALAMI - The Gauteng Outdoor Expo at Kyalami has come and gone – and it was all the family fun it promised to be.

People came from as far afield as Vereeniging to view some of the displays at Waterfall Polo Estate.

Pravin Maharaj, a Vereeniging resident, said the trip was worth it. He came with his friend, Aloeno Folcheini, who agreed with him. “The trip isn’t far as long as you are with great friends.”

On the other end of the spectrum, the Pink Drive also had their stall and truck present at the expo. “We are also here to promote the More Balls Than Most campaign, which unlike its sister campaign, is focused on prostate cancer,” said Tshepiso Mojanaga, a representative of Pink Drive.

“A lot of women have come to our bus to get their breasts checked by the professional nurse. Such events allow us to raise awareness and help women with early detection for free.”

The 67 Blankets for Mandela drive was also at the expo trying to surpass their own world record. So, while mom and dad were going through the adult entertainment, the children were learning to knit at the stall.

“A seven-year-old member from Diepsloot is already knitting her second blanket,” said Kassey Belluigi, director at Intune Communications and Entertainment, also a member of the Knitwits club, as they call themselves.

“We are crazy about knitting,” she said, excitedly.

“Last year, people made 5 000 blankets towards the campaign and this year, in four months, we’ve received 7 000 blankets.”

She said as it looks as though the campaign is set to break their own record.

According to Belluigi, the campaign was started by Carolyn Steyn, a friend of hers. “She just came to us one day and said, ‘Right, we are all going to learn to knit!’ Which is strange as none of us could cook or knit,” she joked.

“Now, I can knit up a storm. I still can’t cook though.”

The campaign insists on donations that have been handmade.

“All our blankets are made with love,” proclaimed Belluigi.
