Fourways resident and Democratic Alliance Shadow MMC for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun stressed the importance of motorists refraining from bribing Metro police officers.
“In an effort to eradicate illegal activity in the streets of Johannesburg I, together with the Region F director and senior Metro police officials, went on an inspection in the inner city on 3 October,” Sun said. He added that the purpose of the inspection was for him to note the challenges on the streets of Johannesburg and how they could help improve the situation.

“Whilst we were driving around the city, I spotted a Metro police officer having stopped a taxi driver, but then released the driver and put his hand into his pocket. I immediately stopped my vehicle and got out to question the officer,” Sun said.
“After we confronted and searched the officer, who has been serving for 15 years, he admitted to have taken a R50 bribe as wrinkled notes were found in his pocket.”
Sun added that with great disappointment, he ordered for the officer to be taken away for immediate prosecution. “It was sad, but hopefully, one less corrupt Metro police officer is on our streets.”
The councillor cautioned Fourways residents not to take part in illegal activities.
“I believe that public safety cannot only be worked on inside an office, but I must walk the streets to see and resolve the problems. I have committed myself together with my colleagues from the Department of Public Safety, to inspect all regions in the city.
“Yesterday was one of the inspections we plan to conduct in Johannesburg. When I addressed the Metro police change-over parade later on the day, I told the 150 officers, including newly graduated Metro police officers that were on the first day of their job, that I will stand by and protect them with my life if they were doing the right thing. But, I will be the first one to take down those who are involved in illegal activities.
“I believe we can only restore law and order with the respect of the public.”
