Broadacres residents recently expressed anger over the taxis drivers who block a newly built slip road at the exit of Broadacres Shopping Centre on Cedar Road.
The residents claim that this slip road cannot be used by regular motorists as it is frequently blocked by taxis who drop off or pick up passengers.

Although the intersection of Valley and Cedar roads has been around for years, a slip road was recently constructed so motorists leaving the centre could turn left onto Cedar Road with more ease.
“The road upgrade was met with mine and others’ excitement and appreciation,” said a Broadacres resident, who approached Fourways Review on condition of anonymity for fear of public backlash against the resident’s business in the area after commenting on the matter.

“However, this excitement was short-lived and the appreciation that everyone had for the extra lane to turn left has now fallen by the way as it has been taken over and abused by the taxi drivers.
“If you spend a little time from [watching the lane on a weekday, you may note firsthand the lawless and aggressive behaviour of the taxi [drivers].”

Ward 96 councillor, Sbusiso Mthembu acknowledged that taxis were a problem, although he pointed out that both politicians and residents needed to be aware of the fact that the need for public transport is a reality for many communities in South Africa. “You [will] forever have such issues, until we [as a city] consider designating areas for public [transport] in all new developments,” Mthembu said.
“[A good example] of this is Dainfern Square, a new development that is hardly two years old and yet no consideration was given to public transport.”
He also added that the issue had previously been raised with Metro police in the hope that more would be done to enforce road laws.
Taxi operators at the intersection who were approached for comment were unwilling to provide any statements.
