Cancer patient thanks De Meulenare Oncology in a life-changing experience
FOURWAYS– André Steenberg thanks the De Meulenaere Oncology (DMO) publically.
André Steenberg (59), a Paulshof resident, went to the dentist in November 2016 because he had, what seemed to be a small cut in his mouth.
The dentist asked Steenberg if he could take a mouth swab to send a sample to the laboratories. When Steenberg came back from his holiday in January he received bad news.
Professor Bernard Donde confirmed that Steenberg had cancer of the mouth and that he needed to start treatment immediately.
Steenberg is now in remission and wants to thank the staff of De Meulenaere Oncology (DMO) publically.
Donde explained that surgery would have sufficed, but because Steenberg had a stroke in 2016 he did not want to risk it. So, Steenberg had to prepare himself for radiation.
He received radiation every day, excluding weekends, from 4 April until 23 May when he went for his last radiation session.
“I am so happy that I am in remission, but I am also fearful because I won’t be in the constant care of the capable hands of DMO,” said Steenberg.
Steenberg said when he initially found out about his cancer he was terrified, but the oncology staff took care of everything. Steenberg said he had endless respect and gratitude for the team. “They took care of all my medical aid approvals and gave me a structured treatment plan, so I knew what was happening to my body at all times.”

Steenberg will be attending a support group to encourage others with his story; this was advice that Elma Hamilton, his cancer support counsellor, gave to him.
“I want to thank Professor Donde for explaining everything in detail to me. I do not have words to express my appreciation.”
Steenberg is excited to eat normal food again since he had to stick to soft foods and supplements while he was receiving treatment. He is also excited to live a pain-free life again. Steenberg explained that the experience changed his life.
