Mulbarton Road in Fourways is brighter with new road-marking paint, a move Ward 94 councillor David Foley says will make the route safer for motorists.

Foley raised concerns about the road a few weeks ago, noting that faded markings posed a risk to drivers.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) subsequently repainted the lines. Foley welcomed the progress, explaining that the fresh paint gives motorists a clearer indication of their lane positioning.

“For me, it’s bringing additional safety to the community, so people can understand which side of the road they should be on without driving into somebody else,” Foley said.

He emphasised that visible markings are crucial when drivers are distracted.

“Because people are on their phones constantly, where they’re talking or texting,” he said, noting that a distinct centre line keeps drivers in their lanes.

The JRA previously confirmed that road-marking operations had resumed across the city following a new delivery of paint that meets required specifications.

JRA acting head of department for regional operations Mpho Maruping said: “We are using the road-marking paint that complies with the approved JRA specifications and quality requirements.”

Maruping also addressed concerns about durability, saying inspectors verify completed work and that repainting across Fourways is prioritised based on road conditions, traffic volumes, and safety needs.

Requests and complaints from councillors and residents are also considered when determining priorities.

Foley expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying the clearer lines give drivers much-needed guidance.
