Protect your family and home from intruders

PAULSHOF – Home invasion crimes are increasing in the area.

With the level of crime in the area, the spokesperson for Sandton Police Station, Captain Granville Meyer urged community members to practice safety and security measures when at home.

“We live in a time where the level of crime in our area is increasing and residents need to do whatever they can to protect themselves and know what to do when confronted with a crime situation.”

Meyer explained that in order to protect your family and home from intruders, you need to follow these prevention tips:

  • Never open doors to strangers
  • Secure your home with high-security locks and quality doors and window hardware
  • Consider a home security system and even a dog
  • Have an action plan for your family in case intruders enter.

In their bid to help get the community on home invasion crimes, Community Policing Forum’s (CPF) Sandton Sector 4 hold bi-monthly domestic training where domestic workers and gardeners are trained on safety and security.

CPF Sector 4’s Janet Sutherland explained that she is responsible for overseeing the safety and security training and where they will be held in the Sandton area.

“Employers need to know that this training is very important as it helps to curb crime in the area. A domestic worker is a person who is entrusted with the employer’s belongings and when robberies take place, it is mainly the domestic workers or gardeners who are the ones in danger,” said Sutherland.

She explained that the safety and security training equips the domestics with which steps to take when confronted by an intruder and how to go about protecting themselves against the robber or robbers.

“It is also important for employers to provide their domestic help with a panic button so that help is available as quickly as possible when in a crime-related situation.”

She indicated that at these safety and security training sessions, she also teaches the workers what information they need to disclose to people who approach the gate asking to see or drop off things for their employer.
