The Crawford College girls water polo teams have brought home three medals in the last four weeks as their athletes have made a splash in the sport.
The U15 girls competed in an U16 tournament held at Durban Girls College at the beginning of September. As the youngest team in the tournament, this was not always going to be easy, but these young girls made it to the finals in the tournament through grit and grind before losing in a penalty shoot-out against host school Durban Girls College, earning them silver medals.
Ten days later, the same team headed to Port Elizabeth to compete in the annual Collegiate U15 tournament. The Crawford U15 girls had straight wins against all top teams in the country and found themselves in the finals, once again, against great rivals Reddam Constantia. In an intense and nail-biting finish, the Crawford girls managed to secure their first gold medal as a team, in the dying seconds of the game.

With only a few days before the next tournament, the National Co-Ed Schools 1st Team Water Polo Tournament 2019 at Kingswood College in Grahamstown, the girls remained in the Eastern Cape, and were joined by three Grade 11 girls who had been competing at the U19 St Annes tournament. This new team now represents the schools stayers’ 1st Team going into 2020.
Again an exceptionally young side who competed against schools whose sides were largely made up senior girls only. Another few days of hard play and determination saw the Crawford girls missing out on the finals, but finishing on a high in the bronze medal match to score two goals in the last 35 seconds of the match to beat host school Kingswood 7–6.
Congratulations to Jenna van den Bosch, Dariya Gospodinova, Olufunke Gando and Jaime van den Bosch, on being selected as part of the tournament team at the national co-ed tournament.
