Due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak earlier this year and lockdown regulations put in place, most organisations were forced to cancel events that draw many people.
However, a Fourways-based school for learners with special needs, Unity College, did not let this stop them from hosting their school’s annual concert. Instead, the school hosted a virtual annual concert to showcase the learners’ amazing talent. Junior phase teacher at the school, Mandy van Tonder said the learners rose above circumstances and exceeded all expectations in this year’s school concert. “During times like these you really see students dig deep and put their all into the production, even when it is a bit out of their comfort zone.
“It was wonderful to see the school live up to its name, since everyone united to make this production another one for the books.”
She added, “Even though the students knew that it would be a virtual concert and that their friends and loved ones would not be able to attend an actual live performance, they were still captivated, engaged and energetic from the get go.
“There is definitely a star in each of them – born to perform.” She also commended learners for their efforts in what she described as an exceptional performance this year. Van Tonder concluded, “It was an absolute pleasure to witness how enthusiastically the learners responded and how much they enjoyed it.”
