An 18-year-old male suspect, who was rescued from mob justice in Riverside View on February 8, was fighting for his life in hospital after he was allegedly found inside a house’s yard with suspected stolen goods.
Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said the suspect was due to appear in Randburg Magistrate’s Court on February 10, but the matter was postponed because the suspect was still in hospital under police guard.
“The police were conducting routine patrols when they received a complaint of mob justice in progress. They arrived in the nick of time to rescue the suspect, who was badly assaulted by an angry mob after he was allegedly found in one of the yards, carrying a black refuse bag which had three pairs of sneakers in it, allegedly belonging to the complainant,” he said.
Mathebula said the complainant, who is the owner of the house in which the suspect was found, said she was coming from the shop when she spotted a man in her yard. “She screamed for help and that is when neighbours came out in numbers to apprehend and assault the suspect.”
The suspect was rushed to hospital for medical attention and he has since been arrested and charged with theft.
