Fitness fanatics, parents and young learners took part in an inaugural inflatable obstacle course at HeronBridge College on September 24.
The Nqoba Challenge saw more than 700 runners take part in the challenge open to families and children between the ages of four and 13 and had two routes to test participants’ fitness levels. The 3km route was for younger children, while the slightly more challenging 5km was for older children.
JP Lübbe, preparatory head at the school, said he was delighted at the turnout from learners and parents. “It was a brilliant effort for a first-time running of the event. Trail events are popular but even by local trail standards, these are good numbers. A highlight of the day was having a day of good, clean, active fun. There are very few events of this nature and to be able to cater to four-year-olds and 54-year-olds was a treat,” he said.
Lübbe mentioned the impact this event had on the community, as families from Fourways and beyond had taken part in the fun on the day.
He added that the school cannot wait to host the event again, as there are hopes to make the Nqoba Challenge an annual one for everyone to add to their calendar. “Covid has taken many things from us, the greatest of that is a community and this was a real community builder. We had families from the Fourways area enjoying the beautiful outdoors together.
“Irrespective of one’s school, fitness level or kit availability, one could participate and have fun with a large group of like-minded people. We need more of these sorts of events.”
