Lonehill Chess Academy was launched a few months ago but has been growing by leaps and bounds. The academy was focused on teaching chess to learners from the age of four in Fourways and the surrounding areas.
The founder and director of the academy, Jay Venkat gave reasons behind its establishment, “Our objective is to enhance the competencies of learners and help them leverage the benefits of chess into their academic side in school studies. With Project Khanya we intend to extend this objective to the economically underprivileged kids in Diepsloot too.”

On November 4, the academy conducted its Annual Assessment Tournament 2023 where learners competed over five rounds of games in two categories. U10 and U12 sections.
The tournament according to Venkat, was well received with almost two dozen participants. “We were there to witness the unimaginable competitive gaming by participants bringing out incredible promise to their journey through next year.”
These were the results:
- LCA Champion 2023 – Mast. Aditya
- LCA U10 Category- Mast. Mritunjai
- LCA U12 Category- Mast. Anantsai
She added: “We are invested in some of the best minds in the game as coaches for the academy. They come with years of experience, training different skill levels and ages of learners. Our offerings are segmented under group coaching wherein a set of not more than three learners are trained by a specialised coach. Besides that, the personal coaching model offers coaching by an expert trainer to build specific goal-based training [plan] to nurture your personality towards the game.”
