One suspect under police guard in hospital after 3 injured during Tempo shooting

Patrons had to run for cover during a shooting at Tempo Luxury Restaurant on January 20, in Sunninghill. As a result, business tycoon Sphamandla Mabonga was shot in the ribs and is reported to be recovering in hospital.

The management of the restaurant wrote a letter of apology and set the record straight shortly after the incident. In it, Tempo said the shootout started when their security staff refused entry to an individual who came to the restaurant carrying a firearm.

“This led to a verbal dispute. Regrettably, the incident rapidly escalated and resulted in the wounding of two of our staff members as well as the said individual. The entire incident unfolded outside the premises, and none of our patrons inside the establishment were harmed.”

Sandton police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said in a media statement that they are investigating two counts of attempted murder and assault with grievous body harm.

“It is reported that four people wanted to force entry into the club without being searched. They further allegedly assaulted the bouncer at the door and pointed a firearm at him, causing the other bouncer to draw his firearm. That is when the random shooting started, leaving two people injured.”

She added, “One suspect has since been arrested and is currently under police guard at the hospital. Police investigations continue.”

The restaurant said, “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities in their investigation and we are taking immediate steps to review and enhance our security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“As the Tempo family, we would like to extend our heartfelt apologies to the victims affected by this incident. We are fully committed to supporting them during their recovery. Additional apologies are extended to our patrons who witnessed this unfortunate incident.”
