Learners of Cedarwood make their own bath salts and sell them

They sold the bath salts at R10 per pack to the staff members of the school.

Learners from Cedarwood School embarked on a entrepreneurial journey following a pre-vocational class where they learnt about measurements in their maths lessons. They learnt about capacity, mass, grams, kilograms and how to measure these with a measuring cup. In the class, learners have a 25% theory component and 75% practical component to their learning. They used the knowledge they acquired to measuring to make bath salts. In making the bath salts, they learnt about measurements as well as handling money.

According to one teacher Suvarna Juggath, pre-vocational is an alternative learning pathway offering a practical approach to learning for pupils who struggle to keep up with the academic demands of the CAPS Curriculum. “This practical activity was a brilliant opportunity to demonstrate to pupils how subjects interlink and can be applied to the real world. For example, how learning about money and measurement in mathematics is relevant to real life situations and can also interlink with topics from English like a creative writing-recipe and life skills, learning entrepreneurship, social skills and more.”

The learners were given a recipe which they needed to follow. They personalised the bath salts with essential oils for a range of scents. Lemongrass, pink rose, lilly of the valley and lavender were the bath salts on sale. Prior to selling the baths salts, they collaborated as a class to design an advert which was sent to the staff. They advertised the bath salts giving details of when and where they will be sold as well as the price. The personalised bath salts sold at R10 per pack.

All profits made are used within the pre-vocational class for other practical activities in their learning.
