Local rugby player is small in size but big in dreams

He may be one of the smallest on the field, but Lwazi Baloyi’s determination and faith are proving that size isn’t everything.

In rugby, size often matters, but a local rugby player shows that heart, hard work, and faith can make all the difference.

For 21-year-old Lwazi Nhlengani Baloyi, his love for the sport ignited during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, a moment he vividly recalls. “My grandmother bought a rugby ball for my brother and me, and from that moment on, we were inseparable from it,” he said.

“We spent countless hours passing it around, breaking things in the house out of sheer excitement, not just for the ball itself, but for the passion, intensity, and hard hits we saw during the tournament. That was the moment rugby became part of me.”

As he grew older, Baloyi began to recognise his talent and gained confidence on and off the field. However, his journey has not been without challenges. Being one of the smallest players in his position, prop, often drew criticism.

“People would laugh or doubt me because of my size, but I refused to let their words define me. Instead, I stayed true to myself, trusted my abilities, and worked tirelessly on my technique and strength.”

Baloyi points to his faith and determination as key drivers in overcoming obstacles. “I place my trust in God’s timing and purpose. Rugby has taught me so much about accountability, discipline, and the value of hard work. It’s helped me grow in patience and understand others better.”

One of the defining moments of his career so far was his transition from Pirates Rugby Club juniors to senior rugby. “Getting selected for my club’s second team straight out of the U21s was a powerful and intense experience. It deepened my love for the game and motivated me to keep pushing forward.”

Today, Baloyi proudly plays for the club’s second team. “It’s proof that my hard work on and off the field is paying off. I believe that God continues to shine His light on my journey as I chase my dream of earning a professional rugby contract.”

Baloyi’s recent game was on May 16 against Wits. ” We played against Wits and the score was 31–29 to Wits.”

His advice to aspiring athletes: “Stay true to yourself. Always believe in your abilities. Love and respect your parents. Keep working hard. Trust God’s plan for your life.”

He emphasised that challenges were part of the process. “God allows challenges for a reason. Be patient, keep pursuing Him, and when the time is right, doors will open. And above all, love yourself, self-love is the foundation of confidence and true self-worth.”
