Old Lions Cricket Club celebrates junior achievements with first-ever awards ceremony
The event recognised and rewarded the achievements of the club's junior players, who have shown commitment, dedication, and excellence in their cricketing endeavours. Several awards were handed out.
On April 6, the Old Lions Cricket Club hosted its first-ever Junior Awards Ceremony at the Dainfern Bottom Oval.
The event was a huge success, with a great turnout of players and parents.
The ceremony was fully managed by the club committee, who also organized a braai for all attendees. The event aimed to recognize and reward the achievements of the club’s junior players, who have shown commitment, dedication, and excellence in their cricketing endeavours.

Several awards were handed out to the junior boys: U9, U11, and U13, including the team award, coaches award, certificate of excellence, and individual awards for bowler, batsman, and player of the season.
The Player of the Season awards went to Luke Riley (U9), Michael Cunningham (U11), and Thomas Lloyd (U13).
The Milestone Award was also presented to players who achieved notable feats. The recipients of this award included Jordan Truscott (U9), who took a hat-trick against Old Edwards, Thomas Lloyd (U13), who took five wickets against Randfontein, and Cooper Swindon (U13), who scored a century against Jeppe.

Old Lions is a locally based cricket community with a committee comprising of cricket enthusiasts. The club was launched in 2022 with the goal of establishing a club cricket presence in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. The club operates under the umbrella of the Old Lions Association, but is a community based club open to the public.
“Our home base is Dainfern College, which hosts our practices and home fixtures,” said Cameron Malcolm, head of marketing and social media at the club.

The club has a total of five senior teams, U18 and over, and three junior sides: U9, U11, and U13.
“We also have a veterans side which competes in the Gauteng Veterans League,” added Malcolm.

The club has grown from strength to strength since its inception, with two senior sides both gaining promotion to the SU1 and SU3 leagues respectively this year. The 2024/25 season showing the biggest growth in the club, with 85+ junior players signed up as members to date.
