Ward 115 councillor Mark Van der Merwe confirmed that the guardrail had been left damaged for four months, after previously being repaired following a serious accident 18 months ago. “This intersection is one of the busiest in the ward, and it’s also a hotspot for accidents, especially when vehicles lose control coming off the freeway.”

Van der Merwe added that he is working with Johannesburg Roads Agency to improve road safety in the area.
Residents have long expressed concern about the safety of the corner, noting that, without a guardrail, vehicles are at higher risk of veering off the road and endangering pedestrians.
The hope now is that the replacement will remain intact, with Van der Merwe urging drivers to exercise caution, and for the community to report safety risks around the area.
